Daours

Daours ( Picard: Dour ) is a northern French village with 794 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the department of Somme in the Picardie region. The municipality is located in the arrondissement of Amiens, in the canton of Corbie and is part of the Communauté de communes du Val de Somme.

Geography

The municipality is below Corbie predominantly on the right bank of the Somme at the confluence of Hallue. In the northeast the valley of the Somme has a pronounced steep bank (La Falaise ) with larger bogs ( Marais de Daours and Marais des Hallettes ) in the valley. In the south also include bogs south of the Somme channeled to Daours; the neighboring community Vecquemont almost forms an enclave within Daours. The breakpoint Daours on the railway line Paris -Lille is outside the municipal area in the municipality of Aubigny (Somme ). The north-west location neighboring community Bussy- lès- Daours on the west bank of the Hallue constricted the municipality a strong. Daours is crossed by the road department D1 and forms Vecquemont a settlement complex.

History

Daours, a place with prehistoric and Gallo-Roman finds, was built on an ancient river crossing along the country roads of Corbie to Amiens and the road to Port- Noyelles. Since the early Middle Ages, the Abbey of Corbie had here rights, including Customs rights. On the Falaises stood the sunken village Wagny to which even a place name recalls, with a priory. Daours had a leper in the Middle Ages. 1597 King Henry IV defeated the Spanish army here. 1615 the site was secured by the Marshal d' Ancre. 1636 Daours was looted and burned by Spanish troops. The Somme was channeled 1821-1827 and a lock was built. After the erection of a wooden bridge across the Somme in the years 1831-1832, industrialization began. 1843 reached the railway Daours. From 1860 to 1865, the church was built as a brick. During the First World War, was a British field hospital. 1940 French troops blew up the railroad bridge, which was perform as a wooden structure again the Wehrmacht.
