Quesnoy-sur-Airaines

Quesnoy -sur- Airaines is a commune with 443 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the department of Somme in the Picardie region; it belongs to the district Amiens and Canton Molliens- Dreuil.

Geography

Quesnoy -sur- Airaines situated at the height between the river Airaines and Saint -Landon 3.5 km east of Airaines on the road D936 department after Picquigny and 10 km north of Molliens- Dreuil.

Toponymy and history

The place name derives from the Roman name of the oak.

In Quesnoy traces of Roman and Merovingian settlement have been found.

The 40 gunmen defended castle was taken in 1422 by the English and Burgundians led by Jean de Luxembourg; The castle was destroyed in the port. In 1680 it was rebuilt under the direction of François le Roy de Valanglart. To 1696 the corps de logis were added. 1738 the stables were built, also a icehouse was added.

During World War II about 50 Senegalese protecting the colonial troops were massacred on June 8, 1950.

The municipal area controlled designation of origin (AOC ) for lamb ( Pres-sales de la baie de Somme) apply. The lambs grazing on salt marshes at the Somme Bay.
