Switzerland at the Olympics

The Olympic Movement of Switzerland is supported by the Swiss Olympic Association since January 1, 1997. It is the umbrella organization of all Swiss sports federations for Olympic and non-Olympic sports. The result is Swiss Olympic from the union of the Swiss National Association for Sport ( SLS ) and the Swiss Olympic Committee (SOC ). In the organization of the National Committee for elite sports ( NKE ) has been integrated in the foundation. The SOC was established in 1912 and (IOC ) had been added in the same year by the International Olympic Committee.

Switzerland is also home to the international Olympic movement. Since 1915, Lausanne is home to the International Olympic Committee. Currently, four Swiss IOC members Denis Oswald (President of the FISA, since 1991), René Fasel (President of the IIHF, since 1995), FIFA president Sepp Blatter (since 1999), the FIS president Gian- Franco Kasper ( since 2000) and Patrick Baumann, FIBA Secretary General ( since 2007).

Participations

Switzerland was represented at the I. Olympics in Athens in 1896 with no national team. Louis Zutter, the first Swiss Olympic champion was only traveling as a private citizen to Greece. Since then, the Confederation took part in all the summer and winter games. 1956 only took the riders in June participated in the outsourced to Stockholm riding competitions. The main event in late November in Melbourne boycotted the Switzerland to protest against the invasion of the Soviet Union in Hungary three weeks before the Games begin.

Successful applications

So far, Switzerland has paid twice Olympic Winter Games. The right to host the Winter Olympics in 1928 were the Netherlands, as host of the Summer Olympic Games, not perceive. Three Swiss cities competed to host. As a venue to St. Moritz prevailed before Davos and Engelberg. The Winter Olympics in 1948 were also held in St. Moritz. The members of the IOC gave the Swiss community in preference to the U.S. Lake Placid.

Should initially for the 2014 Winter Olympics Zurich go as Swiss candidate in the race application. This was decided by the Swiss Olympic Association on 29 March 2004 and gave the city the advantage over Davos as Davos did not meet the requirements of the International Olympic Committee to a candidate city. Because of the lack of political will and financial considerations out the organizers of the application decided on 14 September 2004 but then to abandon an Olympic candidacy.

Of medals won

With a previously won 319 medals Switzerland is ranked 17 in the final medals table of the Olympic Games. Three exceptions (London 1908, Stockholm 1912 and Innsbruck 1964) succeeded the Swiss team in all participations return at least with an Olympic medal.
