World Fencing Championships

The World Fencing Championships are held annually sporting event in which the world champion in the three genera fencing foil, epee and saber are determined. The organizer is the World Fencing Federation ( FIE ). The World Fencing Championships after the Olympic Games, the most important championship in fencing.

The first World Fencing Championships were held in 1937 in Paris. Since then, took place at least one championship every year with the exception of some Olympic year and forced by the Second World War interrupted 1938-1947. From 1921 to 1936 only international fencing championships were held, these competitions are not officially listed as World Championships.

The three fencing classes were introduced only gradually. The sword men's tournament has been held since 1921, the saber tournament since 1922 and the foil tournament since 1926.
