2002 IIHF World U18 Championships

The 4th World Ice Hockey Championships U18 Juniors of the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF Ice Hockey World Championships were in 2002 in the age group of under- eighteen year olds ( U18). In total, between March 5 and April 21, 2002 41 teams in the five tournaments in the top division and the divisions I to III and Asia -Oceania Division part.

In its fourth staging of the competition was reformed. The top division has been increased from ten to twelve teams, the team made ​​three final rounds and three Relegation Round participants playing off into two groups of six. The final round was first not played in the knockout system since the premiere of the competition in 1999. The Asia -Oceania Division was played for the last time. The top three teams were able to qualify for the following year for Division III.

Top Division

The U18 World Championship was held in the Slovak town of Piešťany and Trnava from 11 to 21 April 2002. It was played in Zimný Stadion ( 5,000 seats ) in Piešťany and the Zimný stadium in Trnava with 3,200 seats.

At twelve teams participated in this tournament, who played in two groups of six teams.

Mode

After the group matches in the preliminary competition, all teams qualify for the first three places in each group for the final round. The three teams from each group on the rear seats took part in the relegation round.
