1991 World Rowing Championships

The World Rowing Championships 1991 took place in Vienna, Austria, instead. Especially for those championships, new rowing center at the New Danube was built in Steinspornbrücke, which still serves the rowers as a training venue. The peculiarity of this route, which runs from southeast to northwest and on which it is therefore mostly headwind is that the starting area is surrounded by a nudist area. At the World Cup we asked the naturist (FKK), not to run naked through the area.

Sporty this World Rowing Championships were for the host country Austria quite successful, although gold was missing. For the years before, in 1989 at the LG double sculls by Walter Rantasa and Christoph Schmölzer in Bled (Slovenia ) and 1990 in the double sculls by Christoph Zerbst and Arnold Jonke in Tasmania, Austria had each brought a world title home. In Vienna, there were by Walter Rantasa / Christoph Schmölzer "only" silver in the lightweight double sculls and by Hermann Bauer / Charles Sinzinger in the coxless pairs bronze. The mitfavorisierten Arnold Jonke and Christoph Zerbst left in the men's double sculls in the semifinals out of the title race.

Unforgettable is the first medal in Slovenia immediately after the proclamation of independence of the later EU state. She was duly celebrated with flags and the fact that you threw the successful athletes in the water.
