Grinau

Grinau is a municipality in the district of Lauenburg, in Schleswig- Holstein south of Lübeck.

History

1163 under Henry the Lion appears for the first time the name of the brook " agues Grinave " which gave the place its name. Before 1227 ( Battle of Bornhöved ) Slavic Obotrites had the local area populated, and a " Grin " ( Grin -au ) was ruler of the area south of the River Trave.

Grinau was first a village, then became a noble estate without mansion and stood until 1873 under changing rule.

The Verkoppelung of the 18th century brought the eight hooves ten paddocks and a clear boundary between the Duchy of Lauenburg and Holstein. Only after the abolition of serfdom in 1873 Grinau could regain his freedom and has since been back a village.
