Witzeeze

Witzeeze is a municipality in the district of Lauenburg, in Schleswig- Holstein on the Elbe- Lübeck Canal.

History

The village was first mentioned in records in Ratzeburg tithe register of 1230, then still as Wutsetse. The name is of Slavic origin and means " the converse Hewn ", " the mess " and thus points to the installation of a ground lock through the caps of trees in one to two meters in height and the subsequent planting of creeping thorns, to the German - Slav frontier region to create an impenetrable obstacle.

The Thirty Years War was for Witzeeze a time of destruction. In 1630 it was even completely destroyed by the retreating troops of Tilly and again devastated after reconstruction in 1636 by the Swedes. In the aftermath Witzeeze was quite a small village.

However, after the end of World War II, the population increased to 811 Today the town is mostly residential community, whose inhabitants commute to Hamburg and the surrounding cities.

In 2012 Witzeeze has the state competition "Our village has a future" won and represents Schleswig-Holstein in the national competition in 2013.
