History

1864, even before the foundation of the county and Colorado, the Sand Creek Massacre took place in the midst of today's counties. This was initially referred to as victorious battle of the whites against hostile Indians in the Colorado War. However, investigations revealed that it was the killing of old people and children. Both the Governor John Evans (1814-1897) as well as the commanding Colonel John Chivington were held accountable. The name of the county comes from the Kiowa Indians ago.

From about 1880, the Kiowa County became an agriculturally center of Colorado, and remained so until the early 20th century. This was also favored by the County, the pull-through line.

Today, the area is almost deserted, with only Eads is still a significant settlement. Other settlements threaten to leave permanently. This could lead to a regression of Kiowa counties in the state before the intensive cultivation: prairie with nutrient-poor grassland.
