Larimer County, Colorado

Larimer County is a county located in the state of Colorado of the United States. It is located in northern Colorado on the border of Wyoming and is named after William Larimer, the founder of Denver, named. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Fort Collins.

History

The land was populated by the Ute Indians in the 19th century before the arrival of European settlers. In addition, there were settlements of the Cheyenne and Arapaho of the plains. First appeared as a French fur trappers, these were replaced.

The area came with the Louisiana Purchase, finally, to the United States. The Treaty of Fort Laramie (1868 ) between the settlers and the Arapaho and Cheyenne the colonization of the area began with the whites.

Larimer County established in 1861 as one of the original 17 counties of the Colorado Territory. From the outset it was disputed whether the County was west bounded by the Medicine Bow Mountains and the Continental Divide. In 1909 the country became part of the present-day Jackson County between two mountain ranges. In the extreme north-east of the county is one of the oldest and best preserved archaeological sites in North America: The Linde Meier site is considered the best -known evidence of the Folsom culture of prehistoric Paleo- Indians. The finds have been dated to 10,800 Before Present (~ 8850 BC).

Near Loveland is the reserve Devil's Backbone Open Space in the turn out rock formations of hard Dakota sandstone impressively from the surrounding landscape.
