Douglas County (Colorado)

The Douglas County [ dʌgləs ] is a county in the central part of the U.S. state of Colorado. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Castle Rock.

Geography

The southwestern part of the county is crossed by the Rampart Range, the easternmost mountain range of the Rocky Mountains. This densely forested mountain landscape is separated from the South Platte from the Front Range and also forms the border with the neighboring district of Jefferson. As well as the southern parts of the Front Range was declared the Rampart Range of the Pike National Forest.

Located just south of the Denver Metro area, and is surrounded by the districts in the north Arapahoe, Elbert in the East, El Paso and Teller in the south and Jefferson to the west.

History

Douglas, named after the U.S. politician Stephen Arnold Douglas, is in its current district boundaries since 1874, but was in 1861 with headquarter offices Franktown ( 1861-63 ) and California Ranch ( 1863-74 ) on the newly created Colorado Territory to the original 17 administrative units. While the borders in the west on the South Platte River to Jefferson and never modified in the north to Arapahoe, Douglas forfeited the entire eastern region, which was originally handed to the state border of Colorado.

Population

The population of Douglas is growing rapidly. In the years 1990 to 2005 the population rose by more than fourfold from approximately 60,000 to over 250,000 inhabitants. Although the four cities Parker, Castle Rock, Lone Tree and Larkspur also posted strong growth, this development is mainly due to the development area to the Highlands Ranch. It lies on the northern border of Douglas - south of Littleton and east of Chatfield Lakes. The adjoining the metropolitan Denver area residential area does not have city status, but with around 83,000 inhabitants by far the largest city of Douglas.

According to the census of 2000, there were 175 766 people in the county. There were 60 924 households and 49 835 families. The population density was 81 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 92.77 percent White, 0.95 percent African American, 0.41 percent Native American, 2.51 percent Asian, 0.06 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 1.43 percent from other races groups; 1.88 percent were descended from two or more races. 5.06 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 60 924 households out of which 47.2 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 73.8 percent were married couples living together, 5.7 percent were single mothers. 18.2 percent were non-families. 13.3 percent of all households and 1.9 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.88 and the average family size was 3.19 persons.

Based on the county the population was spread from 31.6 percent population under 18 years, 4.8 percent between 18 and 24 years, 37.9 percent between 25 and 44 years, 21.6 percent between 45 and 64 years and 4.2 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 99.7 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.4 males.

The median income for a household was $ 82,929, and the median income for a family was $ 88,482. Males have a median income of $ 60,729, women $ 38,965. The per capita income was $ 34,848. 2.1 percent of the population and 1.6 percent of families are below the poverty line. Among them were 1.9 percent of the population under the age of 18 and 3.7 percent of the population aged 65 and over.
