Schalkholz

Schalkholz is a municipality in the district of Dithmarschen in Schleswig-Holstein. Besides the town Schalkholz are Dornhorst, Kreuzberg, Crimea, stein and Vierth in the municipality.

Geography

Schalkholz is the Norderdithmarscher Geest. In the municipal boundaries is a remarkable Seitenmoränenlandschaft. While the Saale ice age was already in retreat, they made ​​some time a new initiative, which ended in Schalkholz. The lowlands of the ice tongue and the surrounding marginal moraines are still visible in the landscape. In the Eemian was located at the site of either a large freshwater lake or an estuary.

From the forest, which gave the place its name originally, there is still a small but tall oak scrub forest. Originally the area was rich in grave mounds from the Stone and Bronze Age, of which today but found only flattened residues.

Personalities

The founder of the eponymous supermarket chain Helmut Wandmaker (1916-2007) was born in Schalkholz. The singer and songwriter Hans Hartz (1943-2002) lived for a time in the community.
