George M. Grant

George McInvale Grant ( born July 11, 1897 in Louisville, Barbour County, Alabama; † 4 November 1982) was an American politician who represented the state of Alabama in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Grant was born in Louisville, where he also attended the public school. Between 1918 and 1919 he was the first enlisted man and later aviator cadet in the Air Corps of the United States Army. Then he went to the University of Alabama, Faculty of Law, Tuscaloosa, where he graduated in 1922. Grant received in the same year admitted to the bar and opened a practice in Troy. Some time later, in 1927, he was County Solicitor of Pike County. This activity he held until 1937.

Grant was elected as a Democrat to the 75th Congress to follow in the footsteps of the withdrawing J. Lister Hill. He was re- elected to the 76th, and in the twelve subsequent Congresses. His tenure came on June 14, 1938 to January 3, 1965. His re-election in 1964 in the 89th Congress, however, he lost to Republican William Louis Dickinson. Then he began to practice law.

Until his death aboard the Queen Elizabeth 2, he lived in Washington, DC. He was buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
