Thomas S. Plowman

Thomas Scales Plowman ( born June 8, 1843 in Talladega, Talladega County, Alabama; † July 26, 1919 ) was an American soldier, banker and politician ( Democratic Party).

Private life

Thomas Scales Plowman attended the community school.

During the American Civil War, he enlisted in May 1862 in the Confederate Army and served in Company F, 51st Alabama Cavalry. After the war he went agricultural and commercial activities after Talladega. He was also for several years president of the First National Bank of Talladega and the first president of Bankhead Highway.

Political career

Plowman decided to pursue a political career in 1872 when he successfully ran for the office of mayor of Talladega, a post he held three terms. He took 1888 as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in part. Later he was elected to the 55th Congress, where only 4 March 1897, he worked though until February 9, 1898 as the election of Republican William F. Aldrich was successfully challenged. Plowman was in 1910 and 1911, a member and chairman of the Talladega County Jury Commission over the years. He was also a member of the Senate in 1912 from Alabama.

Plowman died 1919 in Talladega and was buried there in the Oak Hill Cemetery.
