Hagenbach (Haut-Rhin)

Hagenbach is a commune with 693 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Haut-Rhin in the Alsace region. It is part of the arrondissement Altkirch, the canton Dannemarie and the Association of Local Authorities Porte d'Alsace.

Geography

The community Hagenbach located 17 kilometers south of Cernay and 18 kilometers south-west of Mulhouse ( Alsace ) in Sundgau in the southwest of Alsace. The Rhine - Rhône Canal forms the northern border of the municipality.

History

The place name is composed of the German words Hagen and Bach.

In the Middle Ages the village belonged to the county Pfirt, from 1324 to 1648 it belonged to the Habsburgs. The Hagenbach family was mentioned in 1291 for the first time as Seigneurs of Hagenbach, they stood in a feudal relationship with the Habsburgs since 1351. Peter von Hagenbach (1420-1474), was employed by the Duke of Burgundy as a bailiff based in Ensisheim. He owned a castle in Hagenbach, which was destroyed in 1466 by troops of the Old Confederacy.

Culture and sights

On the Rhine - Rhône Canal is at Hagenbach a landlocked harbor with boat rentals and a well-developed bicycle path.

The Baroque church of Saints- Pierre -et -Paul (Peter and Paul ) was built in 1779.

Economy

Until 1972 there was a brickyard in Hagenbach. Today there are several craft shops in the village, four stores and six farms. The elementary school will be organized together with the community Gommersdorf. It has four classes, a kindergarten and a school canteen. The school building also houses the equipment of the fire department.
