Joseph Humphrey Sloss

Joseph Humphrey Sloss ( born October 12, 1826 in Somerville, Morgan County, Alabama; † January 27, 1911 in Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee) was an American lawyer and politician (Democratic Party).

Career

Joseph Humphrey Sloss finished his preparatory studies. He then studied law, was admitted to the bar and then started in St. Louis (Missouri ) to practice. He retired in 1849 after Edwardsville (Illinois), where he continued his activities as a lawyer. Sloss also pursued a political career. It was 1858 and in 1859 a member of the House of Representatives from Illinois over the years. Then he moved to Alabama. There he served after the outbreak of the American Civil War in the Confederate Army. After the war, he served as mayor of Tuscumbia (Alabama ). Sloss was elected to the 42 U.S. Congress and re-elected in the following 43 U.S. Congress. In 1874 his candidacy for the 44th U.S. Congress, however, he suffered a defeat. He served in the U.S. House of Representatives on 4 March 1871 to 3 March 1875. Sloss was appointed on February 10, 1877 U.S. Marshal for the Northern District of Alabama. He held this office until 6 September 1882. Subsequently he was a clerk working at the Federal Court of Huntsville (Alabama ). He also went to agricultural activities near Huntsville. He later moved to Memphis (Tennessee), where he died in 1911. His body was then transferred to Huntsville, where he was buried in the Maple Hill Cemetery.
