Morgan County (Alabama)

Morgan County is a county located in the state of Alabama in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Decatur. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Geography

The County is located in northern Alabama, is about 70 km from Tennessee and has an area of 1552 square kilometers, of which 44 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Madison County, Marshall County, Cullman County, Lawrence County and Limestone County.

History

Morgan County was formed on February 6, 1818 the Cherokee country and first called Cotaco County, according to the Cotaco Creek, which flows through the county. On June 14, 1821, it was renamed in Morgan County, in honor of General Daniel Morgan of Virginia, a hero of the American Revolution. By 1981, Somerville was the district capital, then it was Decatur, which had been named after Stephen E. Decatur, a hero of the Battle of Tripoli from 1804. The courthouse was in 1926 and 1938 completely destroyed by fire.
