Omar D. Conger

Omar Dwight Conger ( born April 1, 1818 in Cooperstown, New York, † July 11, 1898 in Ocean City, Maryland ) was an American politician ( Republican), who represented the state of Michigan in both chambers of Congress.

Born in New York State Omar D. Conger moved with his father, a clergyman, in 1824 to Ohio, where the two settled in Huron County. After schooling he made in 1841 graduated from Western Reserve College in Hudson. Before his entry into professional life, he participated in geological expeditions to the copper and iron areas around the Lake Superior 1845-1847. In 1848 he was then working as a lawyer in Port Huron ( Michigan). In 1850 he was elected judge of the Court of Justice in St. Clair County.

Politically, Conger operated from 1855 as a Member of the Senate of Michigan, a position he held until 1859; in his last year in office he was there, the President pro tempore. During the Civil War he was a member of the state military authority to the rank of Colonel. In 1864 he represented Michigan in the Electoral College, which Abraham Lincoln was re- elected as U.S. president; two years later he was a member of the Constitutional Convention of Michigan.

On March 4, 1869 Conger took his service on the U.S. House of Representatives. He was re-elected five times, and remained until March 3, 1881 in the Parliament chamber. On November 2, 1880 was also the sixth re-election, but at the beginning of the following March session Conger entered in this function already to no more because it chose the state Legislature of Michigan on January 18, 1881 for U.S. senator. He ended his tenure in the House and sat from March 4, 1881 for six years in the Senate. In 1886, he was not nominated by his party for re-election. During his time in the Senate he was chairman of three committees, including the Committee on Manufactures (now the Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation).

After his retirement from Congress Omar Conger worked as a lawyer in Washington. He died 1898 and was buried in Port Huron.
