Adri van der Poel

Adrianus Jacobus Aloysius " Adrie " van der Poel ( born June 17, 1959 in Hoogerheide ) is a former Dutch cyclist. He began his professional career in 1981 and resigned in 2000.

Career

At the beginning of his career was van der Poel road cyclist and has won numerous important races. Among other things, he triumphed at the Tour of Flanders, Paris- Tours, in the Clasica San Sebastian and the Championship of Zurich. In 1983 he became vice world champion in the road race. He also won two Tour de France stages and wore the yellow jersey for one day.

Not only street race, he was successful, but increasingly also in cyclocross races. He soon established himself among the world leaders and drove from the beginning of the 1990s, only in this discipline. He became world champion in 1996 and the overall World Cup in 1997 decided for themselves; He also reached at the World Championships five times second place (1985, 1988-91 ) and twice in third place (1992, 1999).

In a Dutch Hoogerheide Cyclocross race is held annually since 1988, which bears the name "GP Adrie van der Poel " since 2003. Van der Poel 1999 had this race won.

Van der Poel is the son of the French cyclist Raymond Poulidor.

Doping
