Ammerzwiller

Ammerzwiller ( German Ammerzweiler ) is a commune with 374 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Haut-Rhin in the Alsace region. It belongs to the district Altkirch, for Canton Dannemarie and is a member of the Association of Municipalities Porte d'Alsace.

The official spelling of the name is Ammerzwiller, the case that is closest to the actual pronunciation closest to contrast Ammertzwiller. This misplacement of the German z is due to the ignorance of a civil servant in 1924. The council demanded that the correction is not made until today.

The community used within the Communauté de communes de la Porte d'Alsace spelling Ammertzwiller.

Geography

The municipality is located in Sundgau, two kilometers north of the Rhine- Rhône canal and eight kilometers northwest of the city Altkirch.

The neighboring communities of Ammerzwiller are Burn -le -Bas in the north, Bernwiller in the east, the south and Balschwiller Gildwiller in the West.

In good weather you have views of the Alps in the Bernese Oberland.

History

The place belonged to the county Pfirt and went in 1324 with the death of the last Count Ulrich III. and the marriage of his daughter Johanna over to the Habsburgs.

It was completely destroyed during the First World War. The church of Saint -Etienne in the 16th century was 1926/1927 rebuilt. It is dedicated to Saint Stephen. The St. Stephen's Day is a local holiday.
