Bengel

Bengel is a municipality in the district of Bernkastel -Wittlich, in Rhineland -Palatinate. It belongs to the municipality Kröv - Bausendorf. Bengel is a nationally recognized resort.

Geography

The local church is located at the foot of the Eifel at the Alf near the Moselle valley, has about 900 inhabitants and is located in the resort means -Kondelwald. 78 percent of the district area is forested. At Bengel include the districts Springiersbach and Neithof.

History

In today's district Springiersbach founded the monastery Springiersbach the early 12th century. The name of the place Bengel was first in 1144 with the name Baingniul mentioned in a document, when King Conrad III. the monastery Springiersbach took under his protection, and the rights and possessions confirmed. In the confirmation charter of Emperor Frederick I ( Barbarossa ) from the year 1193 the place was called Urchin Bagnuel.

Bengel belonged to the late 18th century to Kröver Empire.

With the occupation of the left bank of the Rhine by French revolutionary troops of the French place in 1794 and was from 1798 to 1814 the Saar Department. 1802 Church and Monastery in Springiersbach were secularized. To save the newly built church in 1769 Springiersbach before the crash, she raised the Trier Bishop Charles Mannay to the parish church of Bengel.

Following decisions at the Vienna Congress in 1815, the Rhineland, and thus also the place Bengel was assigned to the Kingdom of Prussia. Under the Prussian administration of the Trier Region was formed in the Lower Rhine Province and in 1816 the county Wittlich. Bengel was the seat of a mayor who also managed the communities Hontheim, Kinderbeuern and Reil.

Since 1946, the community is part of Rhineland- Palatinate then newly founded.

Policy

The local council in Bengel consists of twelve council members, who were elected at the municipal election held on 7 June 2009 by majority vote, and the honorary mayor as chairman.

Culture and sights

In the district Springiersbach since 1922 a convent of the Carmelite Monastery stands Springiersbach founded in 1102 as an Augustinian monastery, with a rococo church. There, ceiling paintings and carvings can be seen. The monastery was destroyed by fire in 1940. Today it is restored and recovered.
