Edward deGraffenried

Edward deGraffenried (born 30 July 1899, at Eutlaw, Greene County, Alabama, † November 5, 1974 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama) was an American lawyer and politician (Democratic Party).

Career

Edward deGraffenried graduated in 1917 at the Military Academy in Gulfport ( Mississippi). He also served during the First World War as a private in the U.S. Army. He was discharged at Camp Pike in Arkansas on December 5, 1918. Then he went to the law school of the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, where he graduated in 1921. He was admitted as an attorney in June 1921 and then began to practice in Tuscaloosa. He was from 1927 to 1934 and again from 1943 to 1947 worked as a solicitor at the 6th Judicial District of Alabama. In his re-election attempt in 1934 and 1938 in the office, he suffered a defeat on both occasions. He ran unsuccessfully in 1946 to a Democratic nomination for the 80th U.S. Congress, but was elected to the 81st U.S. Congress and re-elected to the 82nd Congress. On his second re-election attempt in 1952 in the 83rd U.S. Congress, he suffered a defeat. He served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 3 January 1949 to 3 January 1953. Then he went his activities as a lawyer after which he held until his retirement shortly before his death. He was buried in the Evergreen Cemetery.
