Eggstedt is a municipality in the district of Dithmarschen in Schleswig-Holstein.

Geographical Location

The town is located near the North Sea-Baltic Canal and can be reached by taking exit Schafstedt the Federal Highway 23.

Community structure

The municipality consists of the villages Eggstedt, Eggstedter wood, Eggstedterdamm, Eggstedter Moor and Eggstedter field.

History

Documented Eggstedt was first mentioned in 1538 as " Eckstede ". the name means place of abode or at the corner or edge.

In the recent times, the place was dominated by agriculture and handicrafts. With the farms dying in agriculture was accompanied by the decline of craft and trade. Today, most professionals have to commute to their workplaces.
