Geographical Location

The municipality is located in the North Sea Dithmarschen march in the triangle of places Heide, Büsum and Wesselburen west of the A23. The community is thus in line with Woehrden, hate constable and Wesselburen the first early medieval settlement line directly at the former North Sea coast.

History

Wellinghusen

The district Wellinghusen is one of the best preserved and archaeologically documented early medieval Dorfwurten in Schleswig -Holstein. Excavations showed in 1994 that Wellinghusen emerged at the end of the 7th century as a settlement of several houses on a residential barn to NN 1.80 m high levee near a tidal creek. It was thus the first phase of the colonization of the North Sea Dithmarsch marshes after the migration period and has a typical for this time round in shape. The mound is located west of the populated already in the in the first centuries AD Seemarschen that is increasingly due to their offshore location mire since about 500 AD.

Before the beginning of settlement at the end of the 7th century grew up on the mound, especially reeds, which made ​​way for the farmsteads and the seasonal, cultivated only in the summer fields with oats, barley and Leinanbau the plant. Above all, the residents took advantage of the surrounding salt marsh as pasture for cattle, sheep and horses. The vegetation consisted of brackish water plant milkweed, Andeln, salt rushes, shed Mieren, Röhrkohl and on slightly higher places sedges, bentgrass and also reed.

The flat settlement was established at a tidal creek, across which a bridge. In the early 9th century, the individual Hofplätze were increased to 3 m above sea level high Hofwurten. Here, the tidal creek was filled with crap, so that a larger Dorfwurt arose. In the 10th century there was a further increase and a Wurtenausbau to a height of 4 m above sea level, more plots of clay are occupied until the 14th century. Overall, the mound grew to 6.20 m above sea level, with a diameter of 250 meters. In the early modern period, however, there were only two yards on the mound, then the Wurtendorf was abandoned. North of the old Wurtendorfes emerged in the 12th century, today's Wurtsiedlung Wellinghusen, as of the 1996 excavations revealed.

The name Norderwöhrden arose after the Dithmarsch had lost their independence in the last feud in 1559, the peasant republic Dithmar was separated into a northern and a southern part. The old parish Woehrden was on the border, so that the center was Wöhrdener with Süderwöhrden in Süderdithmarschen, the Wöhrdener hinterland as Norderwöhrden came to Norderdithmarschen.

During the Second World War about 20 prisoners of war lived in a Norderwöhrdener day laborer house and were used for forced labor in agriculture., The district Edemannswisch came in 1960 to the central water supply.
