Wolfgang Gunkel

Wolfgang Gunkel ( born January 15, 1948 in Berlin ) is a former rower from the GDR. Gunkel 1972 Olympic champion in pairs with coxswain.

Gunkel began as swimmers at the BSG Motor Treptow and then moved as rowers for SG Grunau. It was founded in 1968 together with Helmut Wollmann and helmsman Klaus -Dieter Neubert GDR champion and then fourth at the Olympic Games in Mexico. On the Olympic regatta course in Xochimilco had the boat 0.15 seconds behind the third-placed Danish crew members.

1970 moved Jörg Lucke to Gunkel and Neubert into the boat. In 1971, these two new European champion and the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich won the boat with more than two seconds ahead of the Czechoslovak boat. In 1974 the boat was Vice World Champion and 1975 were Gunkel and Lucke with her new mate Bernd Fritsch world champion. In Olympic Qualification 1976 world champion failed due to the later Olympic champions Harald yearling and Friedrich -Wilhelm Ulrich with her helmsman Georg Spohr. Gunkel traveled as a substitute for the Olympic Games to Montreal. The following year, became world champion Wolfgang Gunkel as a hitter of the GDR rowing eight. Then Gunkel ended his career.

Gunkel is a skilled surgical mechanic, he later worked as a mechanic at the Institute for Research and Development of Sports Equipment in Berlin.
