1989 World Ice Hockey Championships

The 53rd World Ice Hockey Championships and 64th Hockey Championship of Lords in 1989, found after a year's break due to the Olympic Hockey Tournament at the following locations and at the following times:

A total of 29 teams took part in these World Championships, setting a new record.

The only change in competition format, there were in the relegation regulation between B and C and C and D group. Instead of two, there should be only one up and one relegated.

The World Championships were again overshadowed by doping cases. In the A group of Americans Corey Millen was found guilty of doping. However, the penalties of the IIHF did not have particularly serious consequences for the U.S. team, as they had the two games against Canada and Czechoslovakia lost anyway. In addition to the lock for the player, the U.S. team had to deal with only the cancellation of their achieved in these two games gates. A similar situation was in the B group, where the Austrian Siegfried Haberl tested positive. Here, too, the Austrians had lost the game against Norway; the consequences were the same as for the USA. Considerably more difficult the situation represented in the D group where already on 1.Match in both winning teams several doping cases were the same occurred. Both for the Romanians as well as for the British, the conspicuous achievements in defeat, each with 0-0 gates were converted. However, the two loser teams were not declared winners. For them the games with 0-2 points and 0-0 gates counted. For Romania, the consequences would have been fatal, however. Because due to this defeat missed the Romanians Place 1 and thus the rise. Since you looked at this on the part of the Association as undue hardship, it was decided to move up the Romanians as second as short-term in addition to D -Group Winner Belgium. An increase in the C group at 9 teams was thus required.

New world champion was in a sovereign way, the team of the USSR. The Soviets had to fight for the first time at a World Ice Hockey Championships with similar problems to the other major hockey nations. The political opening of the USSR, which had in the late eighties recognized the country under the slogans of glasnost and perestroika, some of the Soviet hockey stars were migrated to the North American professional league NHL and were now the Sbornaja not at the World Cup are available. This had nourished some hopes in the other hockey nations, but were disappointed. Although there were some close games for the world champion, but in the end they won all their tournament games and took their 21 championship and their 26th European title. Even in the final round they were not nervous and remained victorious.
