John L. Burnett

John Lawson Burnett ( born January 20, 1854 in Cedar Bluff, Cherokee County, Alabama, † May 13, 1919 in Gadsden, Etowah County, Alabama) was an American lawyer and politician.

Career

John Lawson Burnett attended the community school, the Wesleyan Institute in Cave Spring (Georgia ), and the local high school in Gaylesville. He studied law and graduated from Vanderbilt University in Nashville (Tennessee). His license to practice law in Cherokee County, he got in 1876 and then began to practice in Gadsden. Burnett also pursued a political career. He was in 1884 a member of the House of Representatives from Alabama and 1886 in the Senate of Alabama. Later he was elected to the 56th U.S. Congress and reelected to the ten succeeding U.S. Congresses. He served in the U.S. House of Representatives on 4 March 1899 until his death in 1919. During this time, he had presided over the Committee on Immigration and Naturalization ( 62 to 65 U.S. Congress ). He was also the 1907-1910 member of the United States Immigration Commission. He was buried at Forest Cemetery in Gadsden.
