Pierce County (North Dakota)
Pierce County is a county located in the state of North Dakota in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is rugby.
Geography
The County is located in north-central North Dakota and has an area of 2803 square kilometers, of which 167 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Rolette County, Towner County, Benson County, Wells County, Sheridan County, McHenry County and Bottineau County.
History
Pierce County was formed in 1887. It was named after Gilbert Ashville Pierce, a governor of the Dakota Territory and later U.S. Senator from North Dakota.

According to the census in 2000, lived in Pierce County 4,675 people in 1,964 households and 1,276 families. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 98.50 percent White, 0.11 percent African American, 0.68 percent Native American, 0.26 percent Asian, and 0.04 percent from other races; 0.41 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.60 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 1,964 households out of which 28.2 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 56.4 percent were married couples living together, 6.3 percent were single mothers, 35.0 percent were non-families, 32.0 percent of all households and 17.1 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.31 and the average family size was 2.94.
Based on the county the population was spread from 23.9 percent population under 18 years, 5.5 percent between 18 and 24 years, 23.9 percent between 25 and 44 years, 22.7 percent between 45 and 64 years and 24.1 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 96.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.5 men statistically.
The median income for a household was $ 26,524, and the median income for a family was $ 34,412. Males have a median income of $ 25,037, women $ 16,946. The per capita income was $ 14,055. 9.3 percent of families and 12.5 percent of families were below the poverty line. Of these, 12.4 percent were children or adolescents under age 18 and 17.0 percent of those 65 years.
