Antigua and Barbuda at the Olympics

The Olympic Movement Antigua and Barbuda began to take shape in the mid- 1960s. Five years after the West Indies Federation, which included the two islands, had taken part in the Summer Olympic Games in Rome in 1960, was created to send to Antigua the desire to own delegation to the VIII British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Kingston ( Jamaica). To this end, Antigua Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association ( AOCGA ) was established in 1965 and the following year Antigua was at the Commonwealth Games in his debut on the international sporting stage. In 1968, the AOCGA then the International Olympic Committee for the first time an application for inclusion in the Olympic family. However, the application was not in accordance with the Articles of Association of the IOC and was rejected. Only in 1975 was started after a reorganization of the AOCGA a second attempt. The IOC accepted at its 77th Session on the edge of the Olympic Winter Games in Innsbruck in 1976, the Application and explained Antigua for temporary membership. As part of the 78th Session of the IOC in July 1976 in Montreal the AOCGA received its full appreciation.

Participations

Antigua took the first time at the Summer Olympic Games in Montreal in 1976 with its own delegation in part. Four years later, returned the AOCGA the invitation to the Summer Olympics in Moscow not, thus conveying the boycott of most Western states. Since the 1984 Summer Olympics the country took part in all the Summer Games.
