Brazil at the Olympics

Brazil, whose NOK, which was Comitê Olímpico Brasileiro, founded in 1935, took part in the first 1900 Summer Olympics. Since 1920, athletes were on all the summer games (except 1928) posted. Since 1992, Brazil also participates in the Winter Games.

A total of 1734 participants were sent, of which 435 are women. Brazilian athletes won 108 medals in the Summer Games. In Winter Games Brazil went so far from empty.

The first medal won in 1920 the Brazilian marksman Afranio da Costa to the outdoor pistol over 50 meters. First Olympic champion was his teammate Guilherme Paraense, who won the Military pistol over 30 meters. Three athletes have so far won two gold medals, Torben Grael and the sailors Robert Scheidt and the Athlete Adhemar da Silva. Grael and Scheidt are also equipped with five medals, the most successful participants, with Grael two gold, one silver and two bronze medals and Scheidt won two gold, two silver and one bronze medal.

On August 29, 2004 the marathon runner Vanderlei de Lima was awarded the Pierre de Coubertin medal.

In 1948, with the 13 -year-old swimmer Talita Rodrígues the youngest female athlete part of Brazil. The oldest participant was in 1992 at age 56 Jumping Nelson Pessoa.

With Rio de Janeiro in 2016 for the first time a Brazilian ( and South American ) city to be host of the Olympic Summer Games.
