Syria at the Olympics

Syria, the NOK, the Syrian Olympic Committee, was established in 1948 and recognized in the same year by the IOC since 1948 takes part in the Olympic Summer Games. 1952, 1956, 1964 and 1976 was decided not to participate. 1960 occurred Syrian athletes as part of the team of the United Arab Republic ( UAR IOC abbreviation ). At Winter Games athletes from Syria took part yet.

A total of 129 athletes were, among them eleven women on. Athletes from Syria have so far won three medals. The first medal was won on 11 August 1984, the wrestler Joseph Atiyeh, who won the silver medal in the heavyweight ( freestyle). The first Olympic victory and at the same time the first medal for a Syrian succeeded on 28 July 1996, the athlete Ghada Shouaa with her victory in the heptathlon.

The youngest member of a Syrian team was 1984, the water Springer Alaeddin Soueidan, which was launched at the age of 13 years. The marksman Joseph Mesmar in 1972 at the age of 50 years, the oldest starter.
