2008–09 Coppa Italia

The Coppa Italia, the Italian Cup competition began in the 2008/ 09 season 9 August 2008 with the first round matches. The finale took place between Lazio and Sampdoria on 13 May 2009. Lazio won the game on penalties and secured the fifth Cup victory the club's history.

Mode

At the 61st edition of the competition participated in a total of 78 teams. The whole of the Serie A season 2008/ 09 as well as 20 clubs in the current series B, da Messina and specialists were not eligible to play because of financial troubles. In addition, 20 teams (formerly C1) provided by the Lega Pro Prima Divisione, each of 10 top finishers of Girone A and Girone B. Lega Pro Seconda Divisione The (formerly C2 ), however, presented only nine teams, each of the group first, and the Playoff finalists of Girone A, B and C. From the highest amateur league in Italy, series D, the remaining nine seats were filled.

In the first round came together the 36 teams in the three lower leagues. The winners of the games then meet in the second round of the 22 clubs in the Serie B. In the third round, again the first division of seats 9-20 last season met the winner of the previous round. The 16 winners of the third round play only once with each other 8 teams, then take 1-8 last season in the second round of the clubs in the courts.

Except for the semi-finals each procedure after the knockout system, only the last four decided by return game.

• * = The match between U.S. Cremonese and Reggiana ended in a 1-0 win for the hosts. Since this began an ineligible player, the match was decided at the conference table and counted with a 3-0 victory for Reggiana.

Final

The final of the Coppa Italia took place on 13 May 2009 at 20:45 in Rome. For the fifth time in club history Lazio won the cup competition. The game ended regular season with a 1-1 draw after Mauro Zárate each scored a goal for Lazio and Giampaolo Pazzini for Sampdoria. Since the extension ended goalless, it was decided in a penalty shootout in which prevailed the host.
