Damscheid

Damscheid is a municipality in the Hunsrück in the Rhein- Hunsrück district, in Rhineland -Palatinate. It belongs to the municipality Sankt Goar - Oberwesel.

Geography

The village lies on a narrow ridge (330 m above sea level), which is bounded on the north by the low stream and in the south of the narrow valley Höller. A broad belt of forest in the west forms the connection of Damscheider country to Hunsrück plateau.

History

The village was first documented in the year 1256th The oldest and most prominent building is the massive, angular church tower with its pointed helmet. He proves that Damscheid before the first mention played long had a role in the political power structure of the Hunsrück. Previously, he was a defense tower and has been built according to experts, 1130-1150. Loopholes, some of which are still visible today, prove that the tower in the Middle Ages served for defense. Damscheid was under the rule of the Electorate of Trier. After the occupation of the left bank of the Rhine by French revolutionary troops (1794 ) the place was French and was from 1798 to 1814 for Canton Bacharach in the Rhine -Moselle department. 1815, the region was assigned to the Kingdom of Prussia at the Congress of Vienna. Since 1946 it has been part of Rhineland- Palatinate then newly founded. In 2006 Damscheid celebrated its 750th birthday.

The local council in Damscheid consists of twelve council members, who were elected at the municipal election held on 7 June 2009 by majority vote, and the honorary mayor as chairman.

Economy and infrastructure

Damscheid was characterized by winegrowing. There are indeed still some winery in Damscheid, but there are fewer and fewer. Some craft shops, such as roofers or plumbing companies are native to Damscheid.

Damscheid hometown for many commuters, as the A61 in the west and the Rhine valley to the east are only a few kilometers away.
