Mermuth

Mermuth is a municipality in the Rhein- Hunsrück district, in Rhineland -Palatinate. It belongs to the municipality Emmelshausen.

Geographical location

Mermuth is characterized by its quiet location, which is due, among other things, that the place can only be reached via a single arterial road. The district is bordered by the valleys of the two streams Ehrbach and Baybach. Both valleys are accessible from Mermuth via hiking trails. In particular, the two entrances into the Ehrbachklamm are delightful to hike. In a wooded area north of the community lies the medieval castle noise.

Geology

In the immediate surroundings of Mermuth stands at Hunsrück Shale and Devonian quartzite. A special feature is a small basalt deposits northwest of the village, in the Hunsrück - is classified as unique - north of Soonwaldsteig. In 2005 it succeeded Wolfgang Welker ( Arrata eV ) to discover a basaltic volcanic vent, which is digested in an old quarry.

History

The community Mermuth is probably one of the oldest settlements in the Hunsrück. The name is attributed to the Celtic words Merre / water and Munt / hole. The early settlement was confirmed by finds.

With the occupation of the left bank of the Rhine in 1794 by French revolutionary troops of the Kurtrierische place was French, 1815, he was assigned to the Kingdom of Prussia at the Congress of Vienna.

Since 1946 it has been part of the newly founded state of Rhineland- Palatinate.
