Gabriel Duvall

Gabriel Duvall (* December 6, 1752 in Prince George's County, Maryland, † March 6, 1844 in Glenn Dale, Maryland) was an American lawyer and judge of the Supreme Court of the United States. From November 11th 1794 to March 28th 1796 he was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives for the state of Maryland.

From 1796 to 1802 he was judge of the General Court of Maryland 1802-1811 Head of Accounts Ministry of Finance. In 1811 he was appointed as the successor of Samuel Chase to the Supreme Court of the United States. He worked there until his retirement in 1834.

In the 23 years of his work as a federal judge Duvall wrote only 17 judgments. Throughout his tenure was John Marshall President of the Court. In only two decisions both represented a different opinion.

The house in Glenn Dale Duvall is a museum open to the public today.
