Richard Bennett Carmichael

Richard Bennett Carmichael ( born December 25, 1807 in Centreville, Queen Anne's County, Maryland, † October 21, 1884 at Carmichael, Maryland ) was an American politician. Between 1833 and 1835 he represented the state of Maryland in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Richard Carmichael was a great-nephew of William Carmichael († 1795), who had been a delegate to the Continental Congress. He attended public school in Centreville and then the Dickinson College in Carlisle (Pennsylvania). Subsequently, he studied until 1828 at the Princeton College. After a subsequent law degree in 1830 and its recent approval as a lawyer, he began to work in Centreville in this profession. At the same time he proposed as a member of the Democratic Party launched a political career. In 1831 he was elected to the House of Representatives of Maryland.

In the congressional elections of 1832 Carmichael was in the second electoral district of Maryland in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Benedict Joseph Semmes on March 4, 1833. Until March 3, 1835, he was able to complete a term in Congress. Since the inauguration of President Andrew Jackson in 1829, was discussed inside and outside of Congress vehemently about its policy. It was about the controversial enforcement of the Indian Removal Act, the conflict with the State of South Carolina, which culminated in the Nullifikationskrise, and banking policy of the President.

After the end of his time in the U.S. House of Representatives Carmichael again practiced as a lawyer. Between 1841 and 1866 he was again a deputy in the State Parliament. In the years 1856, 1864, 1868 and 1876, he participated as a delegate to the Democratic National Conventions. Between 1858 and 1864 Carmichael has also worked as a judge in the Queen Anne's County. In 1867 he served as president of the Constitutional Convention in Maryland. He died on 21 October 1884 on the estate Wye near Carmichael, where he was also buried.
