John S. Spence

John Selby Spence (* February 29, 1788 in Snow Hill, Worcester County, Maryland, † October 24, 1840 in Berlin, Maryland ) was an American politician who represented the state of Maryland in both chambers of Congress.

After schooling John Spence to pursue a career as a doctor. He took his degree in 1809 at the Medical Faculty of the University of Pennsylvania and began practicing in Worcester County. He was also a very early state-level political activities and was a member of both the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate of Maryland. 1882 Spence was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington. He remained there on 4 March 1823 to 3 March 1825. March 4, 1831, he returned as a member of the National Republican Party in Congress back from which he in turn resigned after two years.

After the death of U.S. Senator Robert Henry Goldsborough on October 5, 1836 Spence was elected as his successor. He took his mandate from the December 31, 1836 true and was confirmed at the next election for a further term of, but died already in 1840 in office. In the meantime, he had joined the Whigs.

His nephew Thomas Ara Spence was from 1843 to 1845 also a deputy in the U.S. House of Representatives.
