Golden Globe Award: Best Picture - Drama ( Best Motion Picture - Drama )

Winners and nominated movie productions in the Best Picture - Drama ( Best Motion Picture - Drama ), which honors the most outstanding feature films of the past calendar year. The category was created in 1951 to life. From 1944 to 1950, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association ( HFPA ) awarded a Film Award ( Best Picture ) no distinction between film genre. The award goes to the production company or the U.S. film distribution.

The term of the films must be at least 70 minutes or longer according to current regulations. Musicals should be defined as a comedy or drama, in which song will be used instead of spoken dialogue to advance the plot. Movies with a share of at least 51 percent of non-English dialogue or higher may only be nominated in the category Best Foreign Language Film.

In 37 of 71 cases, the best film drama was later awarded the Oscar, last done in 2014, with the award to Steve McQueen's 12 Years a Slave. Were most awarded films in which Elia Kazan, David Lean and directed by Steven Spielberg led (three wins).
