A minor basilica is a honorary title which the pope gives each church buildings of the Catholic Church, regardless of their design. Currently, about 1,500 churches worldwide carry the title of minor basilica, one third of them in Italy. Some Basilicae minores are simultaneously cathedrals, many do not.
