Wildcard Round

In the wild card round of the Australian brothers Steve and James Mifsud were originally supposed to compete against the two qualifiers who were placed at the worst in the world rankings. However, after the cancellation of Dott and O'Sullivan, the games were invalid, all four players were sent directly to the finals.

Final round

The biggest surprise of the opening round was the defeat of top-seeded John Higgins, who defeated the Englishman Matthew Selt. For Selt it was the first time ever that he had survived the Top -32 round of a ranking tournament. Then he defeated even Stephen Hendry before he succumbed to Shaun Murphy.

For four other players from the top ten from the also came early: Ding Junhui, Judd Trump and Stephen Maguire already adopted in round one. Although local hero Neil Robertson won the opener but then lost against the number 30 in the world, Dominic Dale, albeit in a very tight match. Stephen Maguire was subject to the tournament start the only Irishman in the field, Ken Doherty, who then in the quarterfinals defeated even the set at three Mark Selby. After some time reached Doherty, who had in the previous year to take his place among the top 32 have to fight again the semi-finals of a major tournament. There, however, he succumbed to the world number one Mark Williams clearly with 2:6.

In the second semifinal met Shaun Murphy on Stuart Bingham, who had defeated Ding Junhui at the start and with his quarter-final win over Mark Allen for the first time in his long career in the semifinal was confiscated. Bingham, who had just missed the last among the top 16 in the world rankings, which is below the player automatically set could conquer the world ranking seventh as 6:2.

Opened the final of the English with a 139er Break, the third highest of the tournament. It remained the only Century of the game. After that, a balanced afternoon session, which ended 4:4 developed. In the evening, Mark Williams succeeded the better start and he pulled them on 7:4. In the prior of 8:5 the Welsh had another frame sufficient profit, but Bingham was back to his game and was able to compensate for 8:8. In the deciding frame him then took a risky double with open table on the road to victory. Although he once again showed nerves, but also Williams missed his chance to turn the game, and so Bingham succeeded at the end of the first victory of his 16- year professional career with a world ranking tournament.
