Clark County (Ohio)

Clark County is a county located in the state of Ohio of the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Springfield.

Geography

The County is located just southwest of the geographic center of Ohio and has an area of 1045 square kilometers, of which ten square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Champaign County, Madison County, Greene County, Montgomery County and Miami County.

History

Clark County was formed on December 26, 1817 from parts of Champaign, Greene and Madison County. It was named after George Rogers Clark, a pioneer, fighter in the American Revolutionary War and Indian connoisseurs.

According to the census in 2000, lived in Clark County 144 742 people in 56 648 households and 39 370 families. The population density was 140 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 88.12 percent White, 8.95 percent African American, 0.28 percent Native American, 0.53 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander, and 0.53 percent from other races groups; 1.58 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.17 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 56 648 households out of which 31.4 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 52.6 percent were married couples living together, 12.8 percent were single mothers, 30.5 percent were non-families, 26.0 percent of all households and 11.1 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.49 and the average family size was 2.97.

Based on the county the population was spread from 25.1 percent population under 18 years, 9.1 percent between 18 and 24 years, 26.8 percent between 25 and 44 years, 24.3 percent between 45 and 64 years and 14.7 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 92.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.6 men statistically.

The median income for a household was $ 40,340, and the median income for a family was $ 48,259. Males have a median income of $ 37,157, women $ 24,688. The per capita income was $ 19,501. 7.9 percent of families and 10.7 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 14.9 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years old and 8.2 percent are 65 years old.
