Lawrence County (Ohio)
Lawrence County is a county located in the state of Ohio of the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Ironton.
Geography
The County is located in the extreme south of Ohio, adjacent to West Virginia and Kentucky and has an area of 1184 square kilometers, of which six square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Jackson County, Gallia County, Cabell County ( West Virginia), Wayne County ( West Virginia), Boyd County (Kentucky), Greenup County ( Kentucky) and Scioto County.
History
Lawrence County was formed on December 21, 1815 from parts of Gallia County and Scioto County. It was named after James Lawrence, a naval officer who with the saying: was the British -American War of 1812, after he had been mortally wounded, known as " Do not give up the ship ."

According to the census in 2000 lived in Lawrence County 62 319 people in 24,732 households and 17,807 families. The population density was 53 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 96.55 percent White, 2.09 percent African American, 0.18 percent Native American, 0.19 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander, and 0.11 percent from other races groups; 0.88 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.57 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 24,732 households out of which 32.0 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 56.0 percent were married couples living together, 11.9 percent were single mothers, 28.0 percent were non-families, 24.9 percent of all households and 11.2 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.49 and the average family size was 2.96.
Based on the county the population was spread from 24.5 percent population under 18 years, 8.6 percent between 18 and 24 years, 28.0 percent between 25 and 44 years, 24.5 percent between 45 and 64 years and 14.4 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.4 men statistically.
The median income for a household was $ 29,127, and the median income for a family was $ 35,308. Males have a median income of $ 30,622, women $ 20,961. The per capita income was $ 14,678. 15.1 percent of families and 18.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 27.3 percent were children or adolescents under age 18 and 12.9 percent of those 65 years.
