Lawrence County (Ohio)

Lawrence County is a county located in the state of Ohio of the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Ironton.

Geography

The County is located in the extreme south of Ohio, adjacent to West Virginia and Kentucky and has an area of 1184 square kilometers, of which six square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Jackson County, Gallia County, Cabell County ( West Virginia), Wayne County ( West Virginia), Boyd County (Kentucky), Greenup County ( Kentucky) and Scioto County.

History

Lawrence County was formed on December 21, 1815 from parts of Gallia County and Scioto County. It was named after James Lawrence, a naval officer who with the saying: was the British -American War of 1812, after he had been mortally wounded, known as " Do not give up the ship ."
