Monroe County (Ohio)

The Monroe County is a county located in the U.S. state of Ohio. In the census in 2010, the County had 14,642 inhabitants and a population density of 12.4 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Woodsfield.


The County is located in eastern Ohio and is separated by the Ohio River from the Northern Panhandle of West Virginia. It has an area of 1,185 square kilometers, of which five square miles are water. At the Monroe County borders the following counties:


The Monroe County was formed on January 28, 1813 from portions of Belmont, Guernsey and the Washington County. It was named after James Monroe (1758-1831), the fifth President of the United States ( 1817-1825 ).

According to the census in 2010 lived in Monroe County 14,642 people in 5,972 households. The population density was 12.4 inhabitants per square kilometer.

The racial the population was composed of 98.1 percent white, 0.4 percent African American, 0.1 percent Native American, 0.1 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 1.2 percent were descended from two or more races. Regardless of ethnicity were 0.4 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

In the 5,972 households lived statistically 2.35 per person.

21.5 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 59.1 percent were between 18 and 64 and 19.4 percent were 65 years or older. 50.2 percent of the population was female.

The median income for a household was $ 36,729. The per capita income was $ 18,248. 16.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
