Madison County (Ohio)
The County is located just southwest of the geographic center of Ohio and has an area of 1207 square kilometers, of which two square miles are water. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Union County, Franklin County, Pickaway County, Fayette County, Greene County, Clark County and Champaign County.
Madison County was formed on February 16, 1810 from parts of Franklin County. It was named after James Madison, the fourth President of the United States and the person who told the British war whereupon it came from the 1812-1814 British -American War.
According to the census in 2000, lived in Madison County 40 213 people in 13,672 households and 10,035 families. The population density was 33 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 91.75 percent White, 6.24 percent African American, 0.20 percent Native American, 0.44 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander, and 0.35 percent from other races groups; 1.01 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.73 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 13,672 households out of which 35.2 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 59.2 percent were married couples living together, 9.9 percent were single mothers, 26.6 percent were non-families, 22.3 percent of all households and 9.5 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.62 and the average family size was 3.06.
Based on the county the population was spread from 24.7 percent population under 18 years, 9.1 percent between 18 and 24 years, 32.8 percent between 25 and 44 years, 22.6 percent between 45 and 64 years and 10.9 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 117.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were statistically 121.3 males.
The median income for a household was $ 44,212, and the median income for a family was $ 50,520. Males had a median income of $ 35,251, women $ 26,119. The per capita income was $ 18,721. 6.2 percent of families and 7.8 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 10.5 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years old and 8.7 percent are 65 years old.
