Mahoning County, Ohio
Mahoning County is a county located in the state of Ohio of the United States. The seat of the county seat is in Youngstown.
The County is located in northeastern Ohio, adjacent to Pennsylvania and has an area of 1,097 square kilometers, of which 21 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the County Trumbull County, Mercer County (Pennsylvania), Lawrence County (Pennsylvania), Columbiana County, Stark County and Portage County.
Mahoning County was formed on February 16, 1846 from parts of Columbiana County and Trumbull County. It was named after an Indian term which means as much as the case of the salt blocks ( Salt Licks ).
According to the census in 2000 lived in Mahoning County 257 555 people in 102 587 households and 68 835 families. The population density was 239 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 81.04 percent White, 15.87 percent Black or African American, 0.17 percent Native American, 0.47 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 1.03 percent from other races groups; 1.38 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.97 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 102 587 households out of which 28.4 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 49 % were married couples living together, 14.1 percent were single mothers, 32.9 percent were non-families, 29.1 percent of all households and 13.1 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 3.02.
Based on the county the population was spread from 23.7 percent population under 18 years, 8.4 percent between 18 and 24 years, 26.4 percent between 25 and 44 years, 23.7 percent between 45 and 64 years and 17.8 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 91.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were statistically 88 men.
The median income for a household was $ 35,248, and the median income for a family was $ 44,185. Males have a median income of $ 36,313, women $ 23,272. The per capita income was $ 18,818. 9.6 percent of families and 12.5 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 19.1 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years old and 8.7 percent are 65 years old.
