Franklin County (Ohio)
The County is located a few kilometers south-west of the geographic center of Ohio and has an area of 1407 square kilometers, of which nine square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Delaware County, Licking County, Fairfield County, Pickaway County, Madison County and Union County.
Franklin County was formed on March 30, 1803 from parts of Ross County. It was named after Benjamin Franklin, a North American publisher, statesman, writer, scientist, inventor, natural philosopher and Freemason. He is also regarded as one of the founding fathers of the United States.
According to the census in 2000 lived in Franklin County 1,068,978 people in 438,778 households and 263,705 families. The population density was 765 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 75.48 percent White, 17.89 percent Black or African American, 0.27 percent Native American, 3.07 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 1.03 percent from other races groups; 2.23 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.27 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 438 778 households out of which 30.4 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 43.0 percent were married couples living together, 13.0 percent were single mothers, 39.9 percent were non-families, 30.9 percent of all households and 7.4 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 3.03.
Based on the county the population was spread from 25.1 percent population under 18 years, 11.7 percent between 18 and 24 years, 33.3 percent between 25 and 44 years, 20.1 percent between 45 and 64 years and 9.8 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 94.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.5 men statistically.
The median income for a household was $ 42,734, and the median income for a family was $ 53,905. Males have a median income of $ 37,672, women $ 29,856. The per capita income was $ 23,059. 8.2 percent of families and 11.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 14.2 percent were children or adolescents under age 18 and 8.6 percent of those 65 years.
