Allen County (Ohio)

Allen County is a county located in the state of Ohio of the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is the city of Lima, which was named after the capital of Peru.

Geography

The County is located in northwestern Ohio, is located in the west about 40 km from the border with Indiana and has an area of 1054 square kilometers, of which six square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Putnam County, Hancock County, Hardin County, Auglaize County and Van Wert County.

History

Allen County was formed on 1 April 1820 parts of Shelby County. It was named after Ethan Allen, leader of the Green Mountain Boys, a paramilitary infantry unit in the Revolutionary War or after John Allen, a Colonel in the British -American War of 1812-1814.

According to the census of 2000, there were 108 473 people in Allen County. Of these, 6,113 people lived in collective centers, the other inhabitants living in 40 646 households, and 28,208 families. The population density was 104 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 84.95 percent White, 12.19 percent Black or African American, 0.21 percent Native Americans, 0.55 percent Asian, 0.01 percent Pacific Islander, and 0.63 percent from other races; 1.45 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.42 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino.

Of the 40 646 households out of which 32.9 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 53.0 percent were married couples living together, 12.4 percent were single mothers, 30.6 percent were non-families, 26.3 percent of all households and 11.2 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 3.05.

Based on the county the population was spread from 25.9 percent population under 18 years, 9.9 percent between 18 and 24 years, 27.6 percent between 25 and 44 years, 22.4 percent between 45 and 64 years and 14.2 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 100.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 98.0 men statistically.

The median income for a household was $ 37,048, and the median income for a family was $ 44,723. Males have a median income of $ 35,546, women $ 23,537. The per capita income was $ 17,511. 9.6 percent of families and 12.1 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 17.0 percent were children or adolescents under age 18 and 9.6 percent of those 65 years.
