Evangeline Parish, Louisiana
The Evangeline Parish (French: Paroisse d' Évangéline ) is a parish located in the state of Louisiana in the United States. In the census in 2010, the Parish had 33,984 inhabitants and a population density of 19.8 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( Parish Seat) is Ville Platte.
Geography
The Parish is located just west of the geographic center of Louisiana, is in the south about 100 km from the Gulf of Mexico, also located in the west about 100 miles from Texas and has an area of 1760 square kilometers, of which 40 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered by the following Parishes:
History
The Evangeline Parish was formed in 1910 from parts of St. Landry Parish. The first settlers were German, French, Spaniards, Scots and Irish, the French share of the population was greatest and has maintained a French- Creole mixture until today.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Evangeline Parish 35 434 people in 12,736 households and 9,157 families. The population density was 21 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 70.42 percent White, 28.57 percent Black or African American, 0.23 percent Native American, 0.14 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander, and 0.18 percent from other races groups; 0.46 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.04 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race, were members of the various groups mentioned.
Of the 12,736 households out of which 38.0 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 52.3 percent were married couples living together, 15.5 percent were single mothers, 28.1 percent were non-families, 25.8 percent of all households and 11.9 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.64 and the average family size was 3.19 persons.
In relation to the parish the population was spread out 29.6 percent of residents under the age of 18, 9.6 per cent between 18 and 24 years, 27.6 percent between 25 and 44 years, 20.4 percent between 45 and 64 years and 12.8 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 99.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 98.1 males.
The median income for a household was $ 20,532, and the median income for a family was $ 27,243. Males have a median income of $ 30,386, women $ 16,793. The per capita income was $ 11,432. 27.2 percent of families 32.2 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 39.1 percent were children or adolescents under age 18 and 31.0 percent of those 65 years.
