St. Mary Parish, Louisiana
The St. Mary Parish (French: Paroisse de Sainte- Marie) is a parish located in the state of Louisiana in the United States. In 2010, the Parish had 54.650 inhabitants and a population density of 34.4 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( Parish Seat) is Franklin.
Geography
The Parish is located in southern Louisiana, bordering the Gulf of Mexico and has an area of 2898 square kilometers, of which 1311 square miles are water.
The largest watercourse in St. Mary Parish is the Atchafalaya River, a tributary of the Mississippi and common of the Red River, which flows south of Morgan City into the sea.

The St. Mary Parish was formed in 1811 from parts of St. Martin Parish.

According to the census in 2000 lived in St. Mary Parish 53,500 people in 19,317 households and 14,082 families. The population density was 34 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 62.79 percent White, 31.79 percent Black or African American, 1.39 percent Native American, 1.64 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.88 percent from other races groups; 1.50 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.15 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race, were members of the various groups mentioned.
Of the 19,317 households out of which 36.7 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 51.0 percent were married couples living together, 16.5 percent were single mothers, 27.1 percent were non-families, 23.2 percent of all households and 8.7 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.74 and the average family size was 3.23 persons.
In relation to the parish the population was spread out 29.7 percent of residents under the age of 18, 8.7 percent between 18 and 24 years, 28.7 percent between 25 and 44 years, 21.9 percent between 45 and 64 years and 11.0 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 95.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 males.
The median income for a household was $ 28,072, and the median income for a family was $ 33,064. Males had a median income of $ 31,570, women $ 18,341. The per capita income was $ 13,399. 20.6 percent of families 23.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 31.3 percent were children or adolescents under age 18 and 19.0 percent of those 65 years.
