St. Martin Parish, Louisiana

The St. Martin Parish (French: Paroisse de Saint- Martin) is a parish located in the state of Louisiana in the United States. In the census in 2010, the Parish had 52 160 inhabitants and a population density of 27.2 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( Parish Seat) St. Martinville.

Geography

The Parish is located in southern Louisiana, is located in the south about 70 km from the Gulf of Mexico and has an area of 2115 square kilometers, of which 198 square kilometers are water surface. The St. Martin Parish is divided into two not directly interrelated territories: the Upper St. Martin Parish and the Lower St. Martin Parish. The Parish is bordered by the following Parishes:

History

St. Martin Parish was formed in 1807 as one of the 19 original Parishes. It was named after the sainted Martin of Tours (St. Martin).

According to the census in 2000 lived in St. Martin Parish 48,583 people in 17,164 households and 12,975 families. The population density was 25 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 65.95 percent White, 31.98 percent Black or African American, 0.92 percent Native American, 0.29 percent Asian, and 0.20 percent from other races; 0.65 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.83 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race, were members of the various groups mentioned.

Of the 17 164 households out of which 39.7 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 54.6 percent were married couples living together, 15.9 percent were single mothers, 24.4 percent were non-families, 20.7 percent of all households and 7.9 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.78 and the average family size was 3.22.

In relation to the parish the population was spread out 29.5 percent of residents under the age of 18, 9.6 percent between 18 and 24 years, 29.6 percent between 25 and 44 years, 21.2 percent between 45 and 64 years and 10.1 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 96.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.0 males.

The median income for a household was $ 30,701, and the median income for a family was $ 36,316. Males have a median income of $ 30,701, women $ 18,365. The per capita income was $ 13,619. 18.4 percent of families 21.5 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 27.7 percent were children or adolescents under age 18 and 22.1 percent of those 65 years.
